X GIF downloads — common questions
Why does "Save image as" only give me a still picture?+
Because the animation on screen is a video element, not an image. X converted the original GIF into a looping MP4 when it was uploaded, so your browser has no GIF file to save — only the poster frame. Fetching the post through this tool gets you the actual moving file.
Will the downloaded file have sound?+
No. GIF-style posts on X are stored without an audio track, so the file is silent by design. If the post you pasted turns out to have sound, it was uploaded as a regular video rather than a GIF.
Can I upload the file back to X or Discord?+
Yes. The looping MP4 is the format those platforms prefer — it is smaller and sharper than a converted .gif, and both X and Discord will play it as a loop.
Do I need to install anything?+
